YAM's activities include, developing scripts, shooting films, exploring experimental techniques, turning bedrooms into green-screen studios, participating in the organization of film and animation festivals and society screenings. We regularly take our members on outings to festivals, Directors masterclasses and cinema screenings. YAM regularly run workshops for groups of young people in the local area and collaborate with other community organizations in leading various exciting creative projects, including music video and documentary production. Armed with a camcorder, a laptop and some basic film editing software and within the three hours that we meet each Saturday afternoon, the group have produced 20 short films since it's inception. Initially the students lacked confidence and knowledge about how to develop their ideas, some had unrealistic expectations as a result of limited exposure to film as presented by mainstream television and multiplex cinemas. The students have now bridged this gap in their knowledge and are forging ahead with prolific involvement in innovative low to no budget film projects. Our ethos is to demonstrate digital filmmaking as an accessible medium, not only to develop creative and imaginative ideas, but also serve as a vehicle to communicate topics that people experience in their ordinary and extraordinary lives. We are currently based at the Hub, a youth education centre in the heart of a culturally, socially and economically depressed area. There are a number of strands we wish to develop, such as more film screenings and workshops. We aim to bring films, which inform people about social issues and personal themes to audiences which otherwise find such work difficult to access. Our film and animation workshops teach skills in Art, Design and Technology, Literacy and Numeracy, Drama, Information Technology and Media Studies. Our films have been screened at the Blue Elephant Theatre, the NFT, the Hayward Gallery, the South London Gallery and the Dulwich Film Festival in which our short documentary film "Parkbeat" won in the category of best film with community relevance against professional competition. YAM have been interviewed on Peckham Radio and featured on Community TV's, Southwark Hour. Currently, YAM consists of a core group of ten members, who have now reached their late teens and early twenties, are a prolific, dedicated and highly skilled group. We now aim to use the success and achievements of the group as a model for a new group of children between the ages of 10 and 16. We aim to carry out further workshops and build upon our success to date. We plan to run film screenings from the Hub and other local venues, such as schools, community centres and town halls, in order to especially provide young adults with something to do in the evenings. We hope to make independently made films even more accessible by organizing outdoor public screenings in local parks, playgrounds and any white wall we can find! We meet each Saturday for a few hours at the Hub, 103 Asylum Road, Peckham. | ||||||||||||||||||
