"Southwark.TV" is a Borough-wide open-access community media service created by Community TV Trust. It was initially funded by Southwark Council through the Education Department. It offers free webspace and support to local groups, schools and community organisations. Local media can link to local life, and the actual life of an individual, in a way that mainstream media cannot. Therein lies its power.

HOW IT BEGAN
"Southwark.TV" launched on 3rd February 2003 with the Pilot Phase in which nine organisations took part from across Southwark. They were drawn from schools, colleges and community groups.

Chris Haydon, Director of Community TV Trust, produced a Review and the anticipated re-launch in Autumn 2003 happened much sooner, in mid-May. Funding from Southwark Council and the Learning & Skills Council ran through to July 2004. "Southwark.TV" lives now on project work, on volunteer support, and sometimes on thin air.

New partners joined the project on a regular basis - we now have over 50 schools and community groups contributing to "Southwark.TV". All are welcome to apply.

There is also room for individual filmmakers too. Two have joined and there are currently others applying. We upload examples of their work onto this website where they are carried in the Community TV Trust section.
