ONE-DAY MEDIA WORKSHOP Saturday 26 September 10am to 5pm
WHEN GLOBAL MET LOCAL
This is a one-day workshop examining the intrinsic characteristics of local and community media as compared with the world of broadcasting and mainstream media. Whether you are filmmaker, teacher, media graduate or student, this exploration of our shifting media culture will prime new thinking and pose telling questions for continuing deliberation.
Chris Haydon, director of CTVT, leads the day. Following a freelance career producing and directing for ITV, C4, US and corporate clients, Haydon has spent the last ten years exploring the UK media landscape from the local perspective.
You will explore a variety of themes involving some practical work:
- Regulating media and promoting culture: trust, ethics, law & the role of Ofcom … does Public Service Broadcasting have relevance in today’s hi-tech multichannel environment ?
- Broadband & Radio as conduits for local media
- Young people’s instinctive grasp of multimedia skills: the C21st way of life
- YouTube’s free service, global impact & communities of interest
- Negative news agendas: a public health issue … combined with practical shooting & editing of a local news story to explore moral dilemmas and editorial responsibilities
- Corporate agendas & branded news
- Linear scheduling: the end of the road ?
- Attention spans, DVD architecture, non-linear viewing habits
One feature of the day will be Haydon giving a Paper on “Local Media & Spirituality” written for a conference in Teheran last year.
