This article appeared in SPAG's March 2004 Newsletter We reported last month that Southwark Parks Department was at last taking action to remove the puddle blocking the gateway at the north-west corner of Camberwell Green. But, we wrote, "We won't be organising a victory party just yet. We don't know how many months the Council's contractors will need to drill a hole. Nor can we be sure that the hole won't get blocked with leaves after the next shower." For once, our pessimism proved unjustified. A narrow grillel now extends across the gateway. As a result, even after heavy rain, you can walk to the Pensioners Centre via Camberwell Green without getting y ou feet wet or swinging on the gate. Of course, this means that pensioners who welcomed a rainy day as an excuse for a bit of healthy gate-swinging now have to find other ways of keeping fit. Perhaps the Parks Department could open the Camberwell Green playground to the over-60s. That way, we'd get swings and roundabouts! | |||||||||||
