Purple Membrane Interactive Light Installation Tine Bech June 18th 2005 From 7 – 10 pm Camberwell Artsweek Live Art Camberwell Leisure Centre Artichoke Place, London SE5
Purple Membrane is an interactive light installation in Camberwell Leisure Centres swimming pool - a membrane of light and mist to dive and swim through. Purple Membrane provides an opportunity for people to participate as both swimmers and audience. It is free and open to all people. A mist bar using fresh water will create fine fog to reflect the lighting from above. The event is part of Camberwell Arts Festival Live Art (previously Camberwell Artsweek). The artist Tine Bech works with sculpture, drawings, installations and sound, exploring the membrane between the body and the world. By using materials that relate to the body, such as tactile materials, interactive technology and sound, her work seeks to trigger an interaction between the artwork and the viewer. Nigerian life in London captured The display is a London-wide celebration of African cultures. An exhibition of photographs capturing the life of Nigerians living in London opens on Thursday. Photographer Toyin Sokefun, from Lagos in Nigeria, spent three months snapping everyday life for Nigerians living in Peckham and Camberwell.
The area is said to be home to the biggest Nigerian community in the UK. The results will be displayed at the South London Gallery until May.
Ms Sokefun said it was "wonderful" to discover "a Lagos in London".
Arts grant
The photographer has been taking pictures of churches, restaurants and bars as part of the Depth of Field project.
She is one of six photographers who took part in the project but was the only one to gain an Arts Council grant to travel to London and take pictures of Nigerians living in the UK.
The other five photographers have taken pictures of Lagos which will also go on display at the Peckham Road gallery.
A project spokeswoman said the exhibition was a London-wide celebration of contemporary and past African cultures.
