First Volunteer Teacher to start soon in Yangon At the end of this year / January 2006, Sarah Mason will be joining Yangon YMCA’s Lifetime Learning Centre to help prepare students for the London University External Degree (BA) programme. Sarah is based in Bangkok, currently working as an intern at the Thailand Office of a UN Inter Agency Project. She has an Australian BA Social Science degree, gained teaching experience in Brisbane and Cambodia, and has worked with youth groups. We hope that Sarah’s attachment will encourage other volunteers to come forward to work with Yangon YMCA. Opportunity: Teaching English classics and/or Computer Science in exchange for free B&B and opportunity for travel. Min period 4 weeks. Room Sponsorship Scheme takes Off To help raise the financial shortfall and enable the new Yangon YMCA Annex to be adequately equipped and furnished, a scheme to find sponsors for the 42 hostel rooms was launched earlier this year. To date, 3 rooms have been sponsored - by the Philip Green Memorial Trust (1) and Watford YMCA (2). More sponsors are urgently required to speed up the commissioning process, so generating much needed income for the YMCA’s education and welfare outreach projects, currently under strain following the tsunami disaster at the end of 2004. Sponsorship is normally £750 and includes a special donor plaque. Opportunity: as an individual or corporate donor, leave a permanent memorial of your support of Yangon YMCA’s work by becoming a sponsor of one (or more) of the remaining 39 hostel rooms. Tsunami Appeal We have raised over £200 in response to the appeal for funds by Tha Nyan, Yangon YMCA’s general Secretary. This will be earmarked for the YMCA Hliang Thayar Children’s Village, which is under pressure to take tsunami orphan children. Opportunity: make a donation to the YMCA tsunami appeal – the sum will go in its entirety to the YMCA Children’s Village. Bringing Music to their ears….. Responding to a request from the YMCA’s music teacher Vum Za Lian, about 60 books of piano music have been taken out to Yangon this year. However the YMCA’s two pianos are in desperate need of repair and we are now seeking advice on how best to sort them out! Future Opportunity: we may well be seeking sponsorship for the repair of these pianos.
