PROMOTING YANGON YMCA HOSTEL ‘by staying at the YMCA hostel, you are helping children in the YMCA Village’

Location: The YMCA is centrally located on the corner of Thein Byu (nearly opposite the Prime Minister’s office) and Mahabandoola Rd. It is convenient for shopping and restaurants, and within walking distance of Sule Pagoda, Scott Market, the waterfront and access to ferries.
Guest Room Facilities: The YMCA in Yangon lets out rooms (with breakfast) to foreign and local guests. In the main building there are some 30 rooms all with air con, some having en suite facilities, others with shared bath /showers. In the new annex, there are 30 new rooms, which are being brought into use as funds become available to furnish and equip them. All rooms will have a.c., refrigerator and TV whilst many will be en suite. Costs start at ?subject=From Website'>8 (for B and B plus free transport to/from airport. The ‘YMCA Village’: Huaing Thar, Yar satellite township, is a poor community on the ‘wrong’ side of the River Yangon on the north-west edge of the city. The people were settled on swampy and polluted land some 14 years ago, from areas in the city which were being cleared for development. Initially the YMCA arranged for boreholes to be drilled to provide decent running water. During the 1990’s the emphasis was to organise the building of school rooms. Nowadays the Yangon YMCA employs teachers across the kindergarten to 10th grade age range, the aim being to try and ensure local children obtain their matriculation, which is necessary for any reasonable job prospect. The YMCA also provides regular food supplies and other materials for the poorer, orphaned children.
